Planning a move? You’ve probably already gotten advice from friends, family, and that one coworker who “moves all the time.” Some of it is gold. A lot of it is outdated, oversimplified, or just…not true.
Select Van handles everything from across-town hops to coast-to-coast relocations to military moves to business relocations, and we’ve heard every myth in the book. Here are seven of the most common ones, and the truth behind them, so you can plan smarter and avoid expensive surprises.
Myth #1: Doing it yourself always saves money
On paper, a DIY move looks cheaper. In reality, the costs add up fast: truck rental, mileage, fuel, moving pads, a dolly, and the value of your own time (plus the friends you’ll owe pizza and favors…and help with their next moves). Add in the risk of a thrown-out back or a dropped TV, and the “savings” can disappear quickly. For many moves, especially long-distance ones, hiring pros costs less than you would expect once everything adds up. And, your energy might be better spent on other things (like setting up the new WIFI, changing your mailing address, and unpacking as the boxes come in…but that’s a story for another blog post).
Myth #2: All moving companies are the same
Price gets all the attention, but it’s only part of the picture. Licensing, insurance, equipment, training, and track record vary widely between companies. A slightly higher quote from a properly licensed, well-reviewed mover can save you from a nightmare with an unlicensed operation. Always check credentials before you book. Price shop. Do your research. It will give you a better picture of what’s available, who’s reliable, and how much things *actually* cost.
Myth #3: You only need insurance for long-distance moves
Accidents don’t care about distance. A box can get dropped just as easily on a 10-minute drive as on a 1,000-mile haul. Understanding your coverage options matters for every move, no matter the mileage. Select understands that we have all your most meaningful possessions in our hands, and we treat them—and you—with respect.
Myth #4: You can book your movers at the last minute
Quality movers fill their calendars fast, especially during peak season (late spring through early fall) and typically around the end of the month. Booking just a few days out can leave you stuck with whoever’s available, or with no help at all. (Asking your friends to keep helping you move can get old fast.) Aim to book several weeks ahead when you can. Months ahead is even better.
Myth #5: The lowest estimate is the cheapest
In our experience, a suspiciously low quote is a red flag, hands down. If every other moving company has quoted you a certain price range, and one company is under-bidding them significantly, there’s a reason.
Non-binding estimates can climb on moving day once *extra* charges appear. Always ask for a clear, written, binding estimate so you know what you’re actually paying—there should be no surprises. The cheapest quote up front can become the priciest move by the end. Again, go with a mover you trust, look for reviews, a filing with the Better Business Bureau, and the recommendation of friends or family that have used the company before.
Myth #6: Movers will transport anything you pack
Reputable companies can’t (and won’t) move certain items: hazardous materials like propane and paint, perishable food, plants for long-distance moves (we do NOT want your plants to die), and sometimes high-value items like jewelry or important documents that you’re better off carrying yourself. Ask for the “do not pack” list early so there are no surprises. We can definitely help you decide what to leave off the truck.
But feel free to ask our movers about the weirdest things they’ve ever had to move. You will hear some great stories.
Myth #7: Everything is automatically covered if it breaks
Many people assume their belongings are fully insured at replacement value by default. But here’s the deal: usually, the standard protection is based on weight, not value, which can mean just cents per pound. If you have valuable items, ask about full-value protection so you’re covered the way you think you are.
Myth #8: Moving is a stressful hassle and no fun at all
Lies! We think of moving as the ultimate adventure. It’s a fresh start in a new place. We’ll take the hardest part off your hands so you can focus on your new home.
The bottom line
A stress-free move comes down to good information and good planning. Don’t let myths and secondhand advice cost you money or sleep. When you’re ready to make your next move, work with a licensed, experienced team that will walk you through your options honestly, from the first estimate to the last box.
